Our story

A Seed of Hope, Intention, & Possibility

In isiXhosa and isiZulu, ukwanda means “to grow,” “to expand,” or “to increase.” For me, ukwanda became a calling. A gentle yet powerful reminder that I’m allowed to grow. To take up space. To believe that more is possible.

And so, uKwandaGro was born. What began as a journey to heal through the soil is now growing into a movement—a path of healing, a purpose grounded in the belief that together, we can cultivate real change.

Our Mission

We’re not here to save anyone. We’re here to see people. To support communities to rise. To build gardens—not just for food, but for dignity, purpose, and connection.

At uKwandaGro, we believe that the earth holds deep wisdom. That growing food can also grow people. And that community-rooted gardens can help address some of South Africa’s deepest wounds: poverty, hunger, disconnection, and hopelessness.

We don’t arrive as saviours. We listen. We learn. We co-create. Because change that is owned by the community is the only kind that lasts.
